Bush Advisors Speak Candidly About Failure

advertisement

I really want to read this Vanity Fair article. I love reading about Bush's personal life. I hate his politics, and I'm not fond of him, but I AM fond of non-success.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

i like that katrina was what broke it. i thought it'd be something VERY early in his second term...like the fact that he won a second term. i kinda just envisioned him going "DAMMIT! I HATE THIS JOB. WHY DID I SIGN ON FOR FOUR MORE YEARS!? I GIVE UP."

i can hear Dubya now: "Gosh darn it, these advisors are traitors! If this trend continues, who's gonna be left to spin my legacy?"

If they're going to be speaking about Bush's failures then we'd better be ready for one looooooooong time of listening. I can't think of anything he did right, let alone list all of his failures.

Well, the article is 14 pages long. I would read it but I am at work and I think I know the gist of it. Unmitigated failure, money for those who have it, and collapse of the US economy. Here is the link.

"In the political affairs shop in particular, you saw a lot of people who just rolled their eyes at ... basically every religious-right leader that was out there, because they just found them annoying and insufferable. These guys were pains in the butt who had to be accommodated."

Well, if they weren't religious fanatics themselves they were still bending to the will of them anyway.  The effect is the same, so it's not worth arguing about.

"Katrina to me was the tipping point," said Matthew Dowd, Bush's pollster and chief strategist for the 2004 presidential campaign. "The president broke his bond with the public. Once that bond was broken, he no longer had the capacity to talk to the American public. State of the Union addresses? It didn't matter. Legislative initiatives? It didn't matter. P.R.? It didn't matter. Travel? It didn't matter."

One disaster, poorly handled by his own administration, and he's no longer able to govern?  The Great Decider!
